|$0 My Commitment: $1,500.00|
In 2011 I first learned about the Pelatonia Ride and the amazing work the OSU James Cancer Center is doing to battle and defeat cancer. Around that same time, my Cousin Molly’s husband Andrew Farley, (age 33), was diagnosed with lung cancer. Andrew began treatment at The James. From them, I learned first hand what The James is doing to fight this terrible disease (see message from Andrew below). Andrew, Molly and their children Jillian and Andrew, with the help of their team at the James have been battling this terrible disease for 7 years! I want to do everything I can to advance cancer research for the Farley’s and everyone else battling this disease.
In early 2017 my Uncle Gary Martie was diagnosed with liver cancer. Uncle Gary had retired from teaching school and he and my Aunt Jeanne were living their dream of retirement in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Unfortunately his battle was short, leaving behind my Aunt, cousins and a new grandbaby. One of Gary’s hobbies in retirement was going on long-distance bike rides. He never rode in Pelatonia, but coincidentally he passed away on the date of Pelatonia 2017. I am riding in his memory in order to fund research to find better treatments and ultimately cures.
This year I’ve committed to riding 55 miles in Pelatonia and raising $1,700 to further cancer research.
“When I was diagnosed with lung cancer over 7 years ago I was referred to the James for cancer surgery because they had a highly ranked thoracic surgeon. He did an amazing job and the entire team of doctors, nurses, and staff made a very difficult and scary situation easier to handle for our entire family. The OSU staff goes above and beyond in compassion and caring! Over my 7 year journey of multiple surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation, and many on-going doctor visits, the team continues to give me high quality care.
During the past four years, as my cancer has progressed, I have been on two different experimental drugs through participation in research studies. These lifesaving drugs would not have been available to me without my oncologist participating in cutting edge research and being aware of the emergence of these new treatments.
My family and I cannot say enough good things about The James staff and facility. It is truly a world class cancer center and we are blessed to have such a facility in the state of Ohio.
Founded in 2008, Pelotonia was established with the objective to fund life-saving cancer research. Focused on a community of passionate fundraisers and centered around a three-day experience of cycling, entertainment, and volunteerism, the Pelotonia community has raised more than $158 million for high-risk, high-reward cancer research. Last year, 8,022 Riders from 39 states and 7 countries participated along with 3,576 Virtual Riders and 3,044 Volunteers. Please join me in supporting this cause, where 100% of your donation will go directly towards cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center-James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute.
