On June 19, 2017, the doctor said 3 words that turned my world upside down; "YOU HAVE CANCER". While training to ride in my first Pelotonia, I was diagnosed with blood Cancer, for which there is no cure, YET. I am now taking oral chemotherapy, FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE,   or until a cure is found.

This past Fall I had some complications because of the Chemotherapy. Some small wounds turned into major issues because my chemo would not allow them to heal, for 4 1/2 months. There were casts, debridement, pain and so much more for what would've been benign wounds if not for my cancer. So, my doctor had to switch my chemo to the 2nd of 3 available options. I learned that she is reserving the worst chemo for WHEN, NOT IF, some major complications start to happen.

Even now it is not lost on me that I am one of the lucky ones with Cancer. So many I know are raging battles with this insidious disease that are far worse than what I am facing.

Even before my diagnosis, I have been affected by this horrible disease. I lost my grandfather as a young child to Leukemia, and my grandmother, while I was a freshman in college, to breast Cancer. In 2018, one of my favorite people in the entire world, my Aunt Dorothy (Dodo), was diagnosed with Colon Cancer on February 26, and lost her fight to this Cancer that metastacized to her liver on April 29, 2018.

So I ride for those that are warriors fighting, those that have lost their battles, and in the hope that there will come a day when nobody sits across from a doctor to hear those three words!
