|Congrats! Keep going!|
Back in January 2015, my friend and Shaker Heights High School c/o 2009 classmate, Kevin Ekeberg, was diagnosed with stage IV stomach cancer at the age of 24. In July, after a week-long stay in the ICU, he was given weeks to live should his health not improve quickly and miraculously. I got the news on Friday, July 31, 2015 – exactly one week before Pelotonia – and went to visit him in the ICU with some of our friends that day. It was clear Kevin wasn’t giving up, and he continued to fight, surrounded by his loved ones, with a positive attitude, gratitude, and the same kind-hearted spirit he always had. I asked him if I could dedicate my ride to him. "I would be honored, Joanie," he said.
That was the last time I would ever get to see Kevin – he passed away on August 18, 2015 after a seven-month battle with cancer. While he will be missed by everyone who knew him, he will never be forgotten, as he has made a lasting imprint on us all.
Over the past 4 years, we've raised $6,185.76 in honor of Kevin. Your support meant a lot to me, but more importantly, it meant a lot to him; the kind words and pictures he saw during his last days helped keep in good spirits.
This year, I #rideforkevin again, and know that his spirit will be with me along the way. I encourage you to join me, by riding, donating, or by sharing his story; we will reach our goal faster together, and we are getting faster every day. Thanks to your generosity and support, there will be a day where no one has to fight like Kevin did.
