Hello my name is Gregory Strohmenger and here is my story,

My brother was a previous two-time participant in the Pelotonia riding the century.  After his second ride, he was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma cancer and spent the next two years battling the beast, and we thought he had it beat and was in remission.  In 2019, he planned to ride his biggest Pelotonia to date, the 180 miler as a survivor, but in May last year, he found out the cancer had returned and metastasized.  He was only given a few months to live, as this time it was spreading rapidly. Never a quitter, he underwent treatment at the James Cancer Center at The Ohio State University to gain what time he could. During this time, I spent many hours at his side, both at the James and his last days at home. As the 2019 Pelotonia rapidly approached, he fought to make it through the weekend.  From his bed, he watched his teammates ride for the cause.  He wore his Jersey the whole weekend of the event.  He passed the following weekend.

I made a vow to my brother that I would ride in his place forevermore and I am honored to ride in his place in the 2020 Pelotonia.  My journey however, has now begun with my own battle.  As a result of seeing my brother’s condition, I got checked out, and in February of 2020, I found out that I have pre-cancerous squamous cell carcinoma and have started my own treatments.

The challenges of COVID-19 have made this year’s Pelotonia a challenge, and the organizers have changed this year’s ride from an organized event to a personal challenge.  CANCER DOES NOT STOP FOR COVID, so neither does my ride.  My personal challenge is to complete four 50-mile rides in four different states.  To further personalize this challenge, my rides will honor a military theme as my brother and I are both veterans.  In MD, the battle of Antietam; PA, the Battle of Gettysburg; SC, Sherman's march to Columbia; and my final ride will be to Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery to my brother’s final resting place.

I ask everyone to donate generously in support of my ride.  All funds raised from my ride will go 100% to support cancer research at the James Cancer Research Center
