My father, Allen Tate was a carpenter by trade and a dreamer at heart. Dad was diagnosed with cancer in 1999 and immediately started his fight to beat the disease by researching all his options from chemo, radiation and hormone therapy. Dad had always been a lover of wooden boats; and transforming them into livable vessels. He always dreamed of building a wooden boat and decided that would be his next project. He began drawing plans for a modest 8-foot sailboat, equipped with a motor and oars. He researched for months reading books, articles and magazines.
By the time construction began, Dad’s health had begun to deteriorate however the project moved forward. Dad asked for me to come out to Florida and put the final coat of paint on the boat and we decided then to name her “Dreamer”. On a beautiful Florida morning Dreamer took her maiden voyage. Dad passed away in 2007 just two weeks after the launch. He accomplished so much and inspired so many, especially me. He loved engineering and the process of creating more than the final product, much like how I approach my creativity as well. He also loved the freedom and sense of calm that came with being on the water, and that is my happy place as well. My Dad, the “Dreamer” is missed much and thought of often.
